Event Formats
Upstream is not a series of lectures, a lunch group or study advice, but also not just a network to get the best internship. Rather, it is a mixture of many elements. The best way to describe it is the many different types of events and activities that we organize and experience together.
There's something for everyone: lunch breaks and social events to get to know each other and relax during stressful exam periods. Academic events to build and strengthen research networks. Excursions and workshops to offer professional orientation and perspectives.
Mentoring
When: By arrangement
Target Audience: Female students and doctoral candidates at all levels of education
Since 2018, the mentoring program has been offered by Upstream for female students and doctoral candidates who would like to exchange experiences with advanced fellow students, mathematicians and researchers. The Upstream mentors not only offer motivation in the stressful phases of the semester, but also advice on everyday student life issues.
Excursions
When: 1-2 per year
Target Audience: Anyone who would like to take a look at working life in a STEM profession.
Curious to see how mathematical models are applied? Upstream organizes excursions to companies where you can gain an insight into the everyday working life of a mathematician or scientist. This is the perfect opportunity to get to know the company better and find out more details about internships or starting a career after graduation or a doctorate. We also visit career fairs at regular intervals and talk to experts and HR managers in the industry about trends and the advancement of women in the STEM sector.
Lectures
When: Several times a year
Target Audience: Anyone who is interested in the topic of the lecture
Although Upstream is not a lecture series, we do organize scientific lectures from time to time. This can be a single lecture, perhaps with a small discussion round, or an entire lecture series or conference. Our guests give an exciting insight into a topic from the mathematical field or their research. Before or after the lecture or at an additional Meet&Greet, questions can be asked and the speaker can get to know the speaker better. Larger events with many guests also offer the opportunity to get to know mathematicians from other cities or countries.
Workshops
When: About once a semester
Target Audience: Depending on the topic
Upstream workshops are a highlight of our program. Events on topics such as leadership, social media and internet presence, networking and mentoring offer the opportunity to acquire key skills that are fundamental to your studies and later career entry, but which are usually neglected in your degree course. There is always a high practical component, so that you can certainly apply what you have learned in the next semester or at an interview for an internship.
Lunch Breaks
When: Every second Wednesday of the semester
Target Audience: Anyone who is enthusiastic about mathematics
The heart of Upstream is our monthly lunch break, which takes place every second Wednesday during the semester. We meet in the Common Room on the 5th floor of the Mathematikon and enjoy our lunch together. A delicious dessert is provided by us. We plan our future events, talk to guests from science or industry or simply chat about our studies.
Social Events
When: Several times a year
Target Audience: Everyone
Our Upstream Network thrives on its participants and a lot of it revolves around studies and careers, but not everything. That's why we also organize other events from time to time, such as a movie night or dinner together. Of course, our other events are also “social” and informal, but these special events are often a bit more relaxed. There's plenty of time to get to know each other better in a relaxed atmosphere and have fun together.
Study Information Day
When: Annually
Target Audience: High school students who are interested in studying math
Our almost traditional study information day takes place once a year. Many schoolgirls from the area come to us at the university and are allowed to sit in their first math lecture. After this jump in at the deep end, there is more information about studying, reports on the experiences of older female students and plenty of opportunity to ask questions, get to know each other and gain an insight into studying math.
Upstream Reads
When: Opening hours of the faculty library of mathematics and computer science
Target Audience: Everyone
Upstream has acquired a number of books at the faculty library of Mathematics and Computer Science. We have paid particular attention to titles that deal with the role of women in mathematics - but one or two works on the history of mathematics in general are now also available in the departmental library. Have a browse through the catalog!
