Date and Location of the 11th Seminar

The seminar will take place on

July 21st, 2015
at 1700 hrs s.t.

in room 432 of the IWR building (INF 368).

After the talks there will be food and cold drinks in the common room 514.

Speakers and Abstracts

This time, we have the following speakers:

* Malin Schemschat - Analysis and Optimization of Human Push Recovery Based on Motion Capture Experiments

Human gait (i.e. walking) is a very complex movement. Not knowing how to stable gait, young children often fall. Once adult, humans normally learned efficient, adaptable and robust gait and are able to react in suitable ways to avoid falling. However, after reaching a certain age, they fall again more frequently and the injuries they sustain are worse than in their childhood. Therefore it is a very important to learn more about human disturbances.

In this talk I will present different push experiments that we did to collect data for my research and give an overview of the modelling approaches using multi-simulations and optimization algorithms. The improved understanding of human movement can be used to support medical treatment planning as well as to develop devices and training plans that prevent people from falling. Another application of the results is the development of walking strategies for humanoid robots.

* Rahul Nair - Random Stuff I learned during my PhD.

Just like any other extreme sport a PhD can be thoroughly enjoyable. But however it was, in the end you still are happy to have survived. In this talk I'd like to share some of the mathematical tools and other lessons learned that proved invaluable to ensure my survival. These include topics from machine learning, automatic differentiation, and some general musings on research, experimentation and writing papers.  Wherever possible, I will discuss these topics using examples from my work on depth imaging.

We're looking forward to seeing you for some pizza afterwards in the common room, so we don't have to eat all the food and drink all beer afterwards by ourselves.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
