SIAM Exkursion to Lufthansa Systems

6th December 2018
7 am

Lufthansa Systems is an information technology service provider, which works on (amongst other things) navigation systems and entertainment systems for aircrafts. So this is certainly going to be a rewarding field trip! It is planned to have a guided tour and employees are going to present to us their field of work.

SIAM is looking for members who want to give a talk at this field trip. This is a great opportunity to make a first step into industry, so they highly encourage you to volunteer by writing them a mail with title, abstract and preferably a short bio. Currently there are three slots available.

For your registration by Wednesday 7th November 2018 please write to   siamchapter@uni-hd.de
Just write us a short mail if you want to participate and state whether you own a BahnCard (25/50) or a semester ticket.

The travel expense will be covered.

Ladyshenskaya Lecture - Dr. Anna Trykozko

13 June 2018
3:45 - 5:45 pm

HGS MathComp cordially invites you to join the Ladyshenskaya Lecture. It is a formate promoting outstanding, pioneering female mathematicians. It's an excellent opportunity to develop perspectives for one's own career. Together with the lecture we invite you meet and greet Dr. Anna Trykozko (University of Warsaw) at the informal get together over coffee and cake.

Program

3:45 Meet & Greet - Common Room (5/303)
4:15 Ladyzhenskaya Lecture - Pore scale modeling of flows in weakly permeable porous media - a hybrid computational approach

Abstract

Studying effective properties of porous media based on simulating flows at pore scale has become a widely applied procedure during last years. Realistic structures of pores are commonly obtained by X-ray computed micro-tomography (micro-CT). In this work we consider weakly permeable samples in which a significant fraction of porosity could not be detected at a micro-CT resolution. We therefore apply an approach in which parts of samples characterized as _solids_ during micro-CT imaging are treated as permeable porous media represented with an assumed (small) permeability. Reliable estimations of permeability of ‘solid’ parts were obtained by incorporating Scanning Electron Microscopy data. This way our computational hybrid approach combines two microimaging methods of different resolutions.

These methods can be transferred to various situations of mentoring or academic supervision in general.
We invite you to meet postdocs and professors from other groups, exchange ideas and experiences in a relaxed, inspiring and productive atmosphere and learn from our mentoring expert Dr. Edelkraut.

Dr. Edelkraut published his monography “Mentoring” at the renowned Springer publishing company and has supported companies like Bosch and Siemens but also LMU in establishing a well-functioning mentoring programme.
