Bilateral Cooperation with Royal University Phnom Penh (Cambodia)

The collaboration between the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), Heidelberg and the Royal University Phnom Penh (Cambodia) started shortly after the turn of the millennium. IWR and RUPP joined forces in several projects at the historical site of Angkor, co-operarted in the design of master courses and curricula for mathematics as a major and minor subject and exchanged students and staff members.

As with other scientific partner institutions, the collaboration includes, but is not limited to

  • exchange of lecturers, researchers and staff
  • guest visits of PhD students
  • joint organisation of workshops, conferences and summer schools.

Joint Events and Actions

  • 2004: Installation of the joint Angkor Project Group (APG) with chapters at both institutions. Several research projects between the partners were initiated from this researchers' network.
  • 2005: RUPP and IWR sign an MoU to further develop the cooperation between the institutions, increase staff and student exchange and work oin common projects.
  • 2006: First granting of the IWR award for Scientific Computing. Ratana Suon from the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA) was the first award recipient.
  • 2008: Kor Sokchea and Bou Vannaren (both from RUPP) receive the 2008 IWR award.
  • 2009: Three students from RUPP were selected to pursue master courses at Heidelberg University, funded by the EMMA Erasmus Mundus Exchange Program
  • 2011: Heidelberg master student Kor Sokchea (RUPP) publishes paper at JCAICT 2011
  • 2012: Researchers from IWR are members of the ACIS 2012 conference held at RUPP
  • 2013: An application for a research and education grant from the World Bank Funds was granted for RUPP with cooperation partner IWR (2 years funding)
  • 2013: Scanning of fragments of "Dancing Shiva"; firm documentation by arte TV
  • 2013: Joint Compact Course: "Efficient Algorithms for Network & Graph Problems" was held at RUPP (Nov)
  • 2014: Joint Workshop "The Mathematics of Decisions, Voting and Elections" was held at RUPP (Nov)
  • 2015: Dr. Winckler visits RUPP as an EMMA beneficiary to work on curriculum revisions for the Mathematics Department and the Faculty for Engineering. (Oct)
  • 2015: Scientific Computing at Heidelberg University (ZuK 5.4) allocates funding to the RUPP-IWR cooperation.
  • 2016: Dr. Ngonn and Dr. Chan attend the WUCSSS Summer School in Bangkok, co-organized by HGS MathComp
  • 2016: Two students from Engineering at RUPP visit HGS MathComp for a summer internship working on a virtual museum prototype
