Best poster award for Khai (2013-03-18)
Khai-Long Ho Hoang got the **Best Poster Award** during the //6th International Symposium on Adaptive Motion in Animals and Machines//, that was held in Darmstadt this month from March 11 - 14 (http://www.amam2013.org/). Khai titeled his poster 'Quantifying dynamic stability in healthy and pathological human locomotion'. He describes in this poster his method how "...to perform dynamic simulation of the human walking motion using Optimal Control and Multiple Shooting and to exploit the concept of N-Step Capturability to describe dynamic stability of human locomotion." The award includes the prize money of 300. Congratulations Khai!

First fellows seminar (2013-02-20)
On February 5th 2013 the First HGS MathComp Fellows Seminar was held. In this first session, around 40 attendees saw two excellent and entertaining talks, one on graphical models by Bernhard Kausler and one on experimental design by Andreas Schmidt. The idea of this seminar is to establish a new, regular HGS-wide event, where current research topics are presented in a comprehensible way. After the talks the attendees have the opportunity for further discussion in a relaxed setting with food and drinks in the common room. 4th Annual Colloquium in Erbach (2012-12-10)
On the 20th and 21st of November 2012 more than 100 fellows, mentors and principal investigators came together to meet and present their work. This years motto was "Welcome to the next level" - an allusion to the funding extension of the HGS MathComp as well as to our efforts to improve the Annual Colloquium from year to year, but also a reminder to all of us that a playful approach to science fosters creativity and often helps achieving our goals faster. The scientific program of the first day was made up of 18 talks in 6 minisymposia and 30 posters, and Stefan Wiesberg (best talk) and Cedric Debes (best poster) received the awards for their excellent contributions. On the second day of the retreat we enjoyed two group talks as well as the presentations of 6 invited speakers, Jan Albersmeyer (Enovos), Volkmar Reinhardt (SEW Eurodrive), Hergen Schultze and Annika Wedemeier (both BASF), Tim Flohrer (ESA/ESOC) and Shirin Faraji (IWR). Their presentations gave a valuable insight on the opportunities that we have after our time as PhD students. Equally important and successful as the scientific program was the social program on the evening of the first day, where the attendees of the Annual Colloquium participated in a relaxing night walk, in a most entertaining powerpoint karaoke event, and in a variety of games. Success with Affine (2012-12-03)
HGS MathComp fellow Ágnes Horvát and M.Sc. student Andreas Spitz (both at the IWR) received a Karl-Steinbuch-Stipend for their project entitled AFFINE: A network-analytic approach to identifying characteristics of cinematic milestones. The stipend is offered by the MFG Baden-Württemberg, a foundation which promotes innovative ideas in computer science and media, and covers project costs like traveling expenses to international conferences and cooperation partners. The aim of the project is to analyze a network of film references containing more than 70.000 movies, extracted from Internet Movie Database. The network consists of citation relationships between the films (such as quotes, remake or parody) indicating which films inspired creators of subsequent films. Network analysis provides methods to discover central, frequently cited films in the network, the so-called milestones. A machine learning approach then allows identifying essential characteristics of these influential films. Thereby the inquiry addresses debated questions in the industry such as the correlation between awards and the long-term success of films.

Due to the extraordinary fruitfull and excellent teamwork of HGS MathComp with its Chinese fellows and guests, representatives of the graduate school are currently attending the PhD Workshop China, which is offered by the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Program). As in 2010 Dr. Winckler and Prof. Hermann want to get in contact with junior scientists and high potentials in the broad field of Mathematics, Computer Sciences and Engineering.
HGS MathComp offers outstanding study conditions for Chinese and international doctoral candidates, as the graduate school is already home to a broad Asian junior scientist community. Next to travel grants and scholarships, the HGS MathComp offers to its scholars the unique international and interdisciplinary research environment of Heidelberg University - a German hotspot of science and education.

Weltbilder der Informatik (2012-10-24)
Die emeritierte Professorin Britta Schinzel, die als erste habilitierte Informatikerin Deutschland den zweiten eingerichteten Lehrstuhl für Informatik an der Universität Aachen besetzte, sprach am Abend des 24. Oktobers über ihre BMBF-Studie "Weltbilder der Informatik".
Das von 2007 bis 2011 durchgeführte Forschungsprojekt erfasste die spezifischen Wahrnehmungen, Vorstellungen und Erfahrungen von Informatik-Studierenden in Bezug auf ihr Studium. Die dabei eingeholten Stimmungsbilder liefern die Datenbasis aufgrund derer die Studie Vorschläge zur Weiterentwicklung der Informatik-Lehre formuliert.
Unter anderem kristallisierte sich in den von Soziologen durchgeführten Gruppendiskussionen und Einzelinterviews mit Informatik-Studierenden (Universitäten Cottbus, Dresden, Freiburg, Karlsruhe und Oldenburg) heraus, dass Nachwuchsinformatiker sich selbst nur selten als Gestaltende sehen: Obwohl sie zumindest in höhreren Semestern wissen, dass ihre Arbeit die Arbeitskultur und damit viele Entscheidungsprozesse in verschiedenen sozialen Subystemen maßgeblich beeinflusst, wird die Verantwortung, die der Informatik innewohnt, nur unzureichend berücksichtigt.

Andreas Potschka: Gewinner des Klaus Tschira Preises KlarText 2012!!! (2012-10-12)
Vita Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Potschka (geb. 1980) beendete sein Studium der Mathematik, mit dem Nebenfach Informatik, an der Ruprechts-Karls-Universität Heidelberg im Jahre 2006 mit Auszeichnung. Seine Forschungsarbeit verfasste er anschließend am Interdisziplinären Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR) der Universität Heidelberg. Unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Hans Georg Bock legte er im Dezember 2011 seine Promotion mit dem Titel A direct method for the numerical solution of optimization problems with time-periodic PDE constraints ab, welche mit summa cum laude bewertet wurde. 2009 wurde er mit dem Preis "Best talk from a didactical point of view" bei der 14th Belgian-French-German Conference on Optimization in Leuven ausgezeichnet. 2008 wurde er Mitglied der HGS MathComp. Seit 2011 leitet er die Nachwuchsforschungsgruppe MOBOCON am IWR.
Siegerbeitrag Unsere Welt wird immer komplexer. Das gilt nicht nur für die ganz persönliche tägliche Entscheidungsfindung bei ständig wachsender Auswahl an Kaffeevariationen, sondern auch für immer aufwändigere Produktionsmethoden in der Verfahrenschemie. Viele kennen vermutlich das Phänomen, dass sich bei einem Latte Macchiato Milchschaum und Espresso langsam vermischen. Aber lassen sich die Milch und der Espresso eigentlich auch wieder trennen? Vor ähnlichen Fragen steht man häufig in der pharmazeutischen Industrie, wo Wirkstoffe von unwirksamen oder gesundheitsschädlichen Nebenprodukten getrennt werden müssen. In seinem Siegerartikel Mathe Macchiato: Optimal trennen beschreibt Andreas Potschka anschaulich wie komplex die physikalische Trennungsprozesse oft ablaufen. Dabei erklärt er allgemein verständlich die komplizierten Abläufe und Fachbegriffe. Er zeigt, wie diese Prozesse durch Mathematik optimiert werden können und welche Anforderungen der mathematische Algorithmus erfüllen musste, den er hierfür in seiner Doktorarbeit entwickelt hat. In seinem Artikel kommt Andreas Potschka mit einem sprachlichen Bild aus und nimmt den Leser mit in die Geschichte und die wissenschaftliche Fragestellung.

Summer School on Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems (2012-09-27)
- September 24-28, 2012 - 24 participants from all over the world came together for the second Summer School on Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems. In the lectures the organizers Dr. Olaf Ippisch (IWR Heidelberg), Prof. Kurt Roth (IUP Heidelberg) and Prof. Hans-Jörg Vogel (UFZ Leipzig/Halle) covered the physical processes for ground water flow and transport of dissolved chemicals as well as their numerical simulation. In the afternoon the participants used their new knowledge for the exercises, where they did their own numerical simulations on groundwater flow. The Summer School was completed by the conference dinner in the Common Room and a bar hop in the old city.

Science Academy 2012 with vNGG, CoVis and the ICL Group (2012-09-03)
The Science Academy Baden-Württemberg, an initiative of the school and education association "Bildung und Begabung", Bonn, visited IWR on September 3. About 20 pupils, with a deep interest in computer sciences and mathematics met Julia, Sonja, Bastian, Hubert, Robert as well as Hiko, Gerhard and Laura from the department of computational linguistics (ICL) for learning more about their research projects and the interdiciplinary science of IWR. The topics presented ranged from topology to search engines. Practical demonstrations were shown with the 3D-scanner and the cyberboard.

On May 7, Professor Marta Sanz-Solé talked on "Visiting Sets with Random Trajectories". Marta Sanz-Solé is the current president of the European Mathematical Society and also holds a chair at the University of Barcelona. She visited HGS MathComp for our Ladyshenskaya Lecture. This lecture series gives all doctoral students of HGS MathComp and also interested people the chance to meet a famous female mathematician. Whatch out for our next flyer!

Opening of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM (2012-04-04)
Five doctoral students of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University founded the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM at the end of 2011. In the meantime, the group has grown to the largest German Student Chapter and celebrated its Opening Ceremony on March 29. With generous support of SIAM, IWR and the Heidelberg Graduate School HGS MathComp, the event was a bright success, attracting both participants from industry as well as renowned scientists of Heidelberg University. Dörte Beigel and Andreas Sommer are excited: We have expected about 50 participants to attend, finally it have been more than 70! The two were responsible for the organization of the opening event. The remaining members of the executive board of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM, Kathrin Hatz, Holger Diedam and Dennis Janka, returned just in time from Hanoi, Vietnam, where they had given a lecture and support for foundation of a new SIAM student chapter. Holger Diedam welcomed the invited guest speaker Jürgen Hairbucher from Intel, as well as the numerous attending guests, among them the co-founder of the IWR Prof. Jürgen Wolfrum and five representatives of the second German SIAM-Chapter of Trier University, and shortly summarized the activities of the newly founded Heidelberg Chapter: The main goal of our Chapter is to foster the bilateral exchange of industry and academia, as well as strenghening the cooperation between young scientists worldwide. Prof. Rolf Rannacher, dean of the faculty of mathematics and computer science at Heidelberg University, gave a detailed introduction on the wide fields of application of mathematical methods developed at IWR, which range from sattelite orbit determination and optimization of chemical reaction networks to simulation of blood in human heart vessels and automated reconstruction of the cambodian Angkor Wat temple from 3d surface scans - to give just a few examples. Guest speaker Jürgen Hairbucher, director of the Intel Open Lab Munich and jointly responsible for coordination of Intels research and development in the European Union, described Intels vision for 2020. The semiconductor giant runs a variety of research, including the areas energy efficiency, mobility and image processing, often in collaboration with universities. Three selected talks describing the state-of-the-art reseach at IWR marked the ending of the scientific part of the opening ceremony. Dr. Mario Mommer gave a presentation on mathematical modeling and simulation of subdiffusion (transport in porous media), that occurs in living cells. Also dealing with medical applications, Dr. Thomas Wick illuminated in his talk the formation of cardio-vascular diseases as a result of disturbed blood circulation. The audience award, if there had been one, would go to Simon Lenz. In his talk titled Delay Effects in the Livescore of Unser Star für Baku (USfB), he bridged the gap between science and everydays life in the most entertaining way (USfB was the 2012 TV show to determine the german candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest that reaches 100-600 million viewers internationally; the Livescore in USfB showed the current ranking of each candidate and was continuously updated by incoming votes). He figured out why the crowd-pleaser Roman Lob who finally won the German final almost failed in the first show despite a tremendous performance. The mathematical analysis clearly shows that two major effects lead to the unwanted outcome: First, the technical delay between broadcasting the television signal and the incoming of votes, and second, the laziness of the viewers that only called if their favorite was acutely in danger of being eliminated explained Simon Lenz. As a result of this voting system, even an outstanding performer could easily fail, just because his supporters recognize too late that he is in danger being voted off the show. Obviously, also the producers of USfB noticed these problems and modified the voting system after the third show.

DuB Foundation: Postdoc Sponsorship (2012-03-22)
To January 1st 2012, the Daimler and Benz Foundation will establish a new fellowship program which is addressed to young postdoc scientists, regardless of the applicant's nationality. Especially in this phase, important research work is done. To support their work in science, postdocs and junior professors, as well as young scientists in a comparable position, e. g., independent team leaders of groups of young researchers, are to be sponsored in the early phase of their scientific work. Applications can be submitted for the first time until November 15th 2011. The annual funding sum is 20,000 Euros per fellowship. Because the Daimler and Benz Foundation wants to promote outstanding young scientists in the autonomy of their research, the use of the funds is placed at the fellowship holders discretion. It can be used, according to the fellow's individual needs, for financing computers or technical equipment, scientific assistants, research travel, or for participation in conferences. Only printing costs and expendable items are excluded. For the organization of own scientific conferences, additional funds from the foundation can also be applied for to an amount of 2,500 Euros.

ZONTA award for Alumna Miriam Fritsche (only German) (2012-03-14)
Für ihre herausragende Dissertation auf dem Gebiet der Statistischen Physik und der Biophysik wird Dr. Miriam Fritsche mit dem Förderpreis 2011 des ZONTA Clubs Heidelberg ausgezeichnet. Die Nachwuchswissenschaftlerin erhält die mit 3.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung, die in Kooperation mit der Universität Heidelberg vergeben wird, für ihre Doktorarbeit zum Thema Chromosome Kissing und Chromosomenfaltung in Eukaryotischen und Bakteriellen Zellen. Die Arbeit ist im Rahmen der Heidelberger Graduiertenschule der mathematischen und computergestützten Methoden für die Wissenschaften (HGS MathComp) an der Fakultät für Physik und Astronomie der Ruperto Carola entstanden. Die Preisverleihung findet am Montag, 5. März 2012, statt. Die Präsidentin des Heidelberger ZONTA Clubs, Dr. Andrea Köster, wird den Preis überreichen. Miriam Fritsche (Jahrgang 1983) studierte Physik an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt, der Cantoblanco Universidad in Madrid (Spanien) sowie der Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Italien). Nach dem Master-Abschluss im Jahr 2008 wechselte sie an die Universität Heidelberg, um hier ihre Dissertation vorzubereiten. Dafür erhielt sie ein Promotionsstipendium der HGS MathComp. Forschungsaufenthalte führten sie an das Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research und das Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (USA). Ihre Doktorarbeit, die sie im Herbst vergangenen Jahres abschließen konnte, wurde von Prof. Dr. Dieter W. Heermann vom Institut für Theoretische Physik der Universität Heidelberg betreut. Aktuell will Dr. Fritsche am Collège des Ingénieurs in Paris, einer Einrichtung zur Förderung von überdurchschnittlich guten Absolventen der Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaften mit der Vorbereitung auf eine verantwortliche Tätigkeit in der Industrie, einen postgradualen Master of Business Administration erwerben. ZONTA International ist ein weltweiter Zusammenschluss von Frauen, die selbstständig oder in verantwortlicher Position tätig sind und das Ziel verfolgen, die rechtliche, politische, wirtschaftliche und berufliche Stellung der Frau zu stärken. Der ZONTA Club Heidelberg mit rund 50 Mitgliedern unterstützt in diesem Zusammenhang regionale und überregionale Projekte. Darüber hinaus wird jährlich der Young Women in Public Affairs Award an sozial engagierte Schülerinnen sowie alle zwei Jahre zusammen mit der Ruperto Carola der Zonta-Förderpreis für junge Wissenschaftlerinnen vergeben.

Visit of a renowned Mathematician - Prof Varadhan at the HGS MathComp (2012-02-08)
Prof Srinivasa Varadhan from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York, USA, visited Heidelberg University in the course of HGS MathComps Courant Lecture series. In his talk on \"large deviations for random graphs and random matrices\", the renowned mathematician and expert on probalistic theory reported on his current research. Complex networks can be found nearly everywhere. There are economic or social networks like commodities or partnerships as well as communication or transport networks in form of internet and logistics. Physiochemical, biological or technological networks are chemical reactions, populations, ecosystems and whole production systems. Prof Varadhan analyses mathematically the behavior of networks like these, which are characterized by the number of knots and random cross-linking. He showed that the networks can adopt different conditions and that the transition between the conditions is accidental. For the understanding and the handling of networks the exploration of possible conditions is crucial. Since 1963 Prof Varadhan has been working at the Courant Institute, one of the leading centers for mathematics and its applications. He received several honors as the renowned Abel Prize of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, which he was awarded in 2007, and in 2010 he obtained the National Medal of Science from the hands of the President of the USA. Varadhan is a current member of numerous societies. His visit to Heidelberg was made possible by HITS, MATCH and HGS MathComp. The Courant Lecture of HGS MathComp serves the purpose is supposed to invite international top researchers in the field of mathematical theory and its transfer to application.

Annual Colloquium 2011: Third time is a charm! (2011-11-16)
The 3rd HGSMathComp Annual Colloquium held from November 9 - 10, 2011 at the Youth Hostel in Altleiningen was given the motto Solus Numquam Vades! (You will never walk alone!) - a statement to emphasize the fellowship of the graduate school. The colloquium was situated at the beautiful site of the Castle Altleiningen in the Palatinate Forest. The well elaborated two days schedule included four Mini-Symposia and a poster session on the first day, as well as Software Introductory Lectures and Alumni Talks on the second day and offered the participating PhD students and their supervisors a great platform to meet and discuss ideas with other fellows. The contributions provided an overview over the wide range of research fields associated with HGSMathComp, e.g. applications in environmental physics, biomolecular simulation and scientific computing in the humanities. During the colloquium excellent talks were given and remarkable posters were presented with the most outstanding among them honored by a Referee Best Talk Award (Sven Wanner), two Referee Best Poster Awards (Karsten Staack and Christoph Weiler), an Audience Best Talk Award (Kathrin Hatz), as well as an Audience Best Poster Award (Christian Goll). Congratulations to the honorees! The vivid and well-attended Social Event that offered both a cozy get-together in the restaurant and an adventurous midnight walk with torches was a great occasion to keep good company with the fellows in a casual and fun way. After all, the 3rd HGSMathComp Annual Colloquium was a great and successful event! True to the motto - Solus Numquam Vades! - spending two days together in a remote location brought all HGSMathComp fellows closer together - both professionally and socially.

Excellent Science, Vivid Presentation (2011-10-18)
On Thursday, October 13th, the Klaus Tschira Foundation presented the KlarText! award for understandable Science. Dr. Christian Kirches, who studied numerical mathematics and optimization in the work group of Prof. Dr.Dr.h.c. Hans Georg Bock, had already completed his diploma thesis at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University. He completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Bock and his colleague Prof.Dr. Gerhard Reinelt in the structured graduate program of HGS MathComp in November 2010 summa com laude. Titled Fast Numerical Methods for Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Model-Predictive Control, Kirches describes in this thesis fast control algorithms and their applications in automotive industry. The algorithms that he developed during his PhD project are already patented. Christian Kirches was a doctoral fellow of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences. After his thesis he conducted a 4-months visit at Argonne National Laboratory, IL, USA and is now working as a postdoc at IWR. If every vehicle would choose the economically best gear any time during driving, much energy and time could be saved. To complete this task, Kirches had to fight a one with 24 zeroes: That is the incredible number of gear shift combinations for trucks with 16 gears doing 20 gear shift operations. To make it possible for a mathematician to teach gear shifting to the board computer, a series of specialized problems had to be solved to downsize this huge number. The solution was a method where the researcher only selectively adjusted gear shifts and partially computed optimal shift combinations. In Kirches publication Schnell Geschaltet! (Fast Shifting!) the reader gets a fascinating insight into the world of mathematics. Through constant connection to every-day-problems, clear and precise language and intuitive analogies the numbers don\'t stay abstract quantities. The reader experiences how science helps to solve optimization problems.

Interdisziplinäres Doktorandinnen-Kolloquium (IDK) Wintersemester 2011/2012 (2011-10-08)
Das IDK ist eine offene interdisziplinäre Diskussionsplattform, die Heidelberger Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen nun schon seit 20 Jahren die Möglichkeit bietet, einander ein Forum zu geben, aktuelle Forschung zu diskutieren, Networking zu betreiben und die wissenschaftliche Karriere zu planen. Das Kolloquium bietet die Möglichkeit, das eigene Dissertationsprojekt vorzustellen und interdisziplinär diskutieren zu lassen. Im besten Fall begleitet das Kolloquium die Promovierende durch die gesamte Dissertationsphase und räumt ihr die Möglichkeit ein, die Fortschritte ihrer Arbeit regelmäßig in Form von Fortschritts- und Abschlussberichten zu präsentieren. Gerade hier hat sich die interdisziplinäre Zusammensetzung der Gruppe - vor allem in der Diskussion von Methoden- und Forschungsansätzen - als sehr bereichernd und konstruktiv erwiesen. Neben interdisziplinärem Austausch, gegenseitiger Hilfestellung und Motivation bietet das IDK auch Gelegenheit zum Austausch über die Position als Doktorandin und die Möglichkeiten akademischer Karriereplanung für Frauen. In den letzten Semestern konnten wir immer wieder externe Referentinnen und Referenten für spezifische Themenabende gewinnen. The role of multiscale structure in biological systems (2011-10-07)
From September 27-29, 2011, there was a a workshop on the role of multiscale structure in biological systems at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling in Warsaw (ICM). This workshop was devoted to mathematical modelling of the population dynamics including spatial aspects, such as intra and extra cellular transport of molecules, and physiological heterogeneity. Junior investigators and fellows of HGS MathComp, e.g. Alexandra Köthe, Elfriede Friedmann, Daniel Gerecht and Anna Marciniac-Czochra, gave talks there and organized this two-day event. Fellowships (2011-09-29)
Die Forschungsautonomie herausragender Nachwuchswissenschaftler zu stärken, ist das Ziel eines neuen Stipendienprogramms der Daimler und Benz Stiftung. Zwei Jahre lang erhalten Postdoktoranden und Juniorprofessoren ein jährliches Stipendium in Höhe von 20.000 Euro. Die Stipendiaten können die Mittel nach individuellem Bedarf frei für ihre Forschung einsetzen: Finanzierung von Computern oder technischer Ausrüstung, wissenschaftlicher Hilfskräfte, Forschungsreisen oder der Teilnahme an Tagungen. Zusätzlich können 2.500 Euro für die Organisation eigener wissenschaftlicher Konferenzen beantragt werden. Das Programm ist offen für alle Fachdisziplinen und Themen. Bewerben können sich Nachwuchswissenschaftler, die in eine deutsche Universität oder wissenschaftliche Einrichtung institutionell eingebunden sind und ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt betreiben. Bewerber sollten zum Zeitpunkt des angestrebten Förderungsbeginns nicht älter als 35 Jahre sein. Zum 1. Januar 2012 werden das erste Mal circa zehn Stipendien vergeben. Bewerbungsschluss ist der 15. An information afternoon on the topic of achieving excellent gender equality, organized for students and affiliates by the equal opportunities commissioners of the faculities of Mathematics & Computer Sciences and Physics & Astronomy took place in the main lecture hall of the Kirchhoff Institute for Nuclear Physics on June 8th. On this occasion instead of nuclear research and new methods in mathematics, the issue which hopefully will soon be a day-to-day one at Heidelberg University, was about combining science and family life. Scientist of both genders and different career levels who successfully combine career and family life, reported on their personal experiences: A PhD student of the physic research group "dynamics of complex systems" started the talk sessions. She reported about the daily routine which she adjusted to optimize her situation: in the early morning some time for child, household, doctor's appointments etc. from 1 pm onwards highly concentrated laboratory work which has to be interrupted at 6 pm due to the closure of the child care facility. A postdoc researcher from the "Universe Cluster Munich", who is nine month pregnant with her third child, mentioned the importance of her own individual organization to allow for a full time job. Furthermore she is dependend on crèche facilities and an au-pair. A BIOMS- and Emmy Noether group leader combines his career- and family duties with the help of his wife who works part-time. Finally Prof Barbara Paech, successful scientist and university lecturer and mother of two, talked about her development and emphasized also the positive aspect of the concept of dual career. After a snack, which gave the opportunity of individual exchange and networking, the equal opportunity office of Heidelberg University presented its options. The success of the event was reflected in the very vivid discussions among the participants and gives the scientists reason to hope that the combination of career and family will one day be a matter of course. FIFA Women's World Cup (2011-07-16)
Thanks to HGS Mathcomp for giving us the opportunity to watch the match for third place of the FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011. It took place in the Rhine-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim. We had a lot of fun watching the French and the Swedish soccer teams fighting for the bronze medal. Due to the awesome goal of Marie Hammarstrom in the 82nd minute, Sweden won the match 2:1. Although some of us were hoarse cheering the French players, we were happy for the Swedish team and it was fun to see the winners dancing ;-) and by the way: Congratulations to the Japanese team on winning the world cup!!!

SCCH 2011 (2011-07-12)
Last week the 3rd conference on Scientific Computing and Cultural Heritage (SCCH'11) took place in the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (HAW) organized by the IWR and the HGS MathComp. Like the previous conference in 2009 it attracted speakers from all over Europe as well as the United States and Asia. The contents of the presentations span an interesting wide range of various methods, applications and projects, like the MayaArch3D collaboration of the University of New Mexico and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Bonn. The invited talk by Henri Eisenbeiss (ETH Zürich) gave an exhaustive overview about newest Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) used in remote sensing and photogrammetry. The invited lecture about detecting and predicting climate effects on cultural stone deterioration by Marie-Francoise Andre (Université Blaise Pascal) demonstrated the urge to understand the long term effects of restoration and tourism on precious temple sites all around the world. Not only Cultural Heritage senior professional were attracted - there were also remarkable student presentation about analysis of historic documents of China, Quadrocopters for excavations as well as reverse engineering to understand archaeological artefacts. The latter was presented by Vera Moitinho (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and won the price for the best student presentation. Due to the success of this biannual conference, the next event is planned for early fall 2013.

The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar. The Institutes for Advanced Study support the focused, self-directed work of outstanding researchers. The fellows benefit from the finest intellectual and research conditions and from the stimulating environment of a multi-disciplinary and international community of first-rate scholars. EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in life and exact sciences, provided that their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities and that it interfaces with humanities and social sciences. The diversity of the 14 participating IAS offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars. Applicants may select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions. HCI Celebration (2011-04-20)
The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) at the University of Heidelberg celebrated 25 years of research in image processing in Heidelberg on April 15, 2011 in the old auditorium (Alte Aula) of the University. Within 25 years a small research group at the Institute for Environmental Physics grew into Germany's largest image processing center. Three alumni (Dr. Horst Haußecker, Intel Labs Santa Clara; Dr. Timo Kohlberger, Siemens Princeton; Dr. Björn Menze, MIT Cambridge), one of the industrial cooperation partners (Dr. Wolfgang Niehsen, Bosch Hildesheim) and Prof. Bernd Jähne (HCI) gave a vivid insight into the developments of the last 25 years and the many application fields of image processing. The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) is an "Industry-on-Campus"-project of the University of Heidelberg. It was founded in 2008 together with Robert Bosch GmbH, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg Engineering, Silicon Software GmbH, and PCO AG as part of the University's excellence initiative. The goal of the HCI is a close interaction between basic and applied research in an environment characterized by interdisciplinary - the HCI is part of a central university institute bridging several faculties, the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and a multitude of fields such as industrial quality control, driver assistance systems, medicine, biology, and environmental sciences, to name just a few. The HCI works on the paradigm that the basic problems of image processing are largely independent of its array of applications. In this way, any solutions to basic problems will immediately become beneficial to many applications at once.

Heidelberg half marathon (2011-04-10)
On the occasion of the 625th anniversary of Heidelberg University more than 12 faculties as well as the team of the central university administration took part in the Heidelberg half marathon on April 10. Also the IWR and HGS MathComp team ran the 21 km ambitious route. The pictures show Phillip Harbach, HGS MathComp student in Prof Dreuw's research group "Theoretical and Computational Chemistry". A tribute to all University teams will be held on July 8, in the sports area of Heidelberg University

Interdisziplinäres Doktorandinnen-Kolloquium im SS 2011 (2011-04-08)
Das IDK ist eine offene und interdisziplinäre Diskussionsplattform, die Heidelberger Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen nun schon seit mehr als 15 Jahren die Möglichkeit bietet, einander ein Forum zu geben, aktuelle Forschung zu diskutieren, Networking zu betreiben und die wissenschaftliche Karriere zu planen. Die teilnehmenden Doktorandinnen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften schaffen sich selbst den Raum zum wissenschaftlichen Austausch über die eigenen Forschungsprojekte. Das Kolloquium bietet die Möglichkeit, das eigene Dissertationsprojekt vorzustellen und interdisziplinär diskutieren zu lassen. Im besten Fall begleitet das Kolloquium die Promovierende durch die gesamte Dissertationsphase und räumt ihr die Möglichkeit ein, die Fortschritte ihrer Arbeit regelmäßig, in Form von Fortschritts- und Abschlussberichten, zu präsentieren. Gerade hier hat sich die interdisziplinäre Zusammensetzung der Gruppe - vor allem was die Diskussion von Methoden- und Forschungsansätzen betrifft - als sehr bereichernd und konstruktiv erwiesen. Abgesehen vom interdisziplinären Austausch, von gegenseitiger Hilfestellung und Motivation haben wir in den letzten Semestern auch zunehmend externe Referentinnen und Referenten zu spezifischen Themenabenden eingeladen. Ausgehend von unserer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Position als Doktorandinnen steht dabei die akademische Karriereplanung als Frau im Vordergrund. Science Slam Premiere (2011-03-29)
Science Slam ist eine neue Form der Wissenschaftskommunikation, die schneller und verständlicher ist als herkömmliche Fachpublikationen. Es geht vor allem darum, jungen Wissenschaftlern die Möglichkeit zu bieten ihre Forschungsergebnisse einem breiten Publikum zu präsentieren und mit anderen Wissenschaftlern fachübergreifend in Kontakt zu treten. Doktoranden und Postdoktoranden aus allen Fachrichtungen sind herzlich eingeladen ihre Forschungsthemen bzw. -Ergebnisse in 10-minutigen Vorträgen zu präsentieren. Selbstverständlich freuen wir uns auch, wenn zahlreiche junge Wissenschaftler als Zuschauer zum Science Slam erscheinen. Successfull presentation of HGS MathComp at this year's AAAS Conference (2011-02-23)
The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of a number of acclaimed journals such as "Science", held its annual conference from February 17-21, 2011 in Washington DC. The Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for Sciences took part in this international meeting and presented its scientific aims and students at the corresponding exhibition. Dr. Nina Zweig, junior research group leader at IWR's Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) gave a talk at the workshop "Discover the German Southwest: Study and Research in Baden-Württemberg", organized by Baden-Württemberg's Agency for International Economic and Scientific Cooperation. This year's theme of the AAAS - Science without Borders - offered an interdisciplinary blend of more than 150 symposia, plenary and topical lectures, specialized seminars, poster presentations, and the large exhibit hall, where Heidelberg University presented it's Cluster of Excellence "CellNetworks", the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe", the Graduate Academy and the HGS MathComp who all presented their research approaches and prospects for funding doctoral and postdoctoral researchers. The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is a non-profit professional society dedicated to the advancement of scientific and technological excellence across all disciplines, and to the public's understanding of science and technology. AAAS is one of the oldest scientific societies in the USA, having been founded in Philadelphia in 1848.

Die 1. Deutsche Informatikerinnentagung findet am 7. und 8. März 2011 in Stuttgart statt. Die Tagung wird gemeinsam von der Universität Stuttgart und der RWTH Aachen ausgerichtet und durch das Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst des Landes Baden-Württemberg MWK gefördert. Chairs sind Prof. Sabina Jeschke (RWTH Aachen University) und Meike Tilebein (Universität Stuttgart) sowie Susanne Ihsen (Technische Universität München), Heidi Schelhowe (Universität Bremen) und Heike Wiesner (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin). Das übergreifende Ziel der Tagung besteht darin, eine große Zahl der heute im deutschsprachigen Gebiet tätigen Wissenschaftlerinnen der Informatik und eng verwandter Gebiete zusammenzubringen, um neue Kooperationen und Netzwerke anzustoßen. Unter den Dachthemen "Green IT" und "Cloud Computing" rufen die Veranstalterinnen der 1. Deutschen Informatikerinnentagung zur Einreichung von Beiträgen (Full Paper und Poster-Abstracts) auf. International Human Frontier Science Program Organization, Strasbourg (2011-01-26)
Research grants are provided for teams of scientists from different countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches to questions that could not be answered by individual laboratories. Emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring together scientists preferably from different disciplines (e.g. from chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering) to focus on problems in the life sciences. The research teams must be international. The principal applicant must be from one of the eligible countries. However, other participating scientists and laboratories may be situated anywhere in the world. Applicants must submit a letter of intent to apply for a research grant via the HFSP web site with a deadline at the end of March, and after review, selected teams will be invited to submit a full application. Two types of Research Grant are available: Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants. The Human Frontier Science Program, Strasbourg, supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms; topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience. A clear emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.

Feedback to the Annual Colloquium 2010 (2010-11-26)
Annual Colloquium: 2010-11-19 "Methods meet Applications" was the motto of the second Annual Colloquium of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences. True to this motto, the doctoral students of the HGS MathComp contributed talks and posters giving a picture of the wide spectrum of research carried out at the HGS MathComp: Applications ranging from modeling the HIV life cycle, creating modern art by dynamic motion to analyzing the airline pricing problem as well as theory on the numerical treatment of the related differential equations models. The lunch and coffee breaks rounded off the event offering time for discussion of new ideas and projects with the other fellows and supervisors. A novelty of this year's Annual Colloquium was the participation of alumni which provided an excellent insight into the multitude job opportunities for the fellows. | Khai-Long Ho Hoang got the **Best Poster Award** during the //6th International Symposium on Adaptive Motion in Animals and Machines//, that was held in Darmstadt this month from March 11 - 14 (http://www.amam2013.org/). Khai titeled his poster 'Quantifying dynamic stability in healthy and pathological human locomotion'. He describes in this poster his method how "...to perform dynamic simulation of the human walking motion using Optimal Control and Multiple Shooting and to exploit the concept of N-Step Capturability to describe dynamic stability of human locomotion." | Success with Affine [2012-12-03] | ||
| HGS MathComp fellow Ágnes Horvát and M.Sc. student Andreas Spitz (both at the IWR) received a Karl-Steinbuch-Stipend for their project entitled AFFINE: A network-analytic approach to identifying characteristics of cinematic milestones. The stipend is offered by the MFG Baden-Württemberg, a foundation which promotes innovative ideas in computer science and media, and covers project costs like traveling expenses to international conferences and cooperation partners.
The aim of the project is to analyze a network of film references containing more than 70.000 movies, extracted from Internet Movie Database. The network consists of citation relationships between the films (such as quotes, remake or parody) indicating which films inspired creators of subsequent films. Network analysis provides methods to discover central, frequently cited films in the network, the so-called milestones. A machine learning approach then allows identifying essential characteristics of these influential films. Thereby the inquiry addresses debated questions in the industry such as the correlation between awards and the long-term success of films. Sabine Kluge |

| The Science Academy Baden-Württemberg, an initiative of the school and education association "Bildung und Begabung", Bonn, visited IWR on September 3.
About 20 pupils, with a deep interest in computer sciences and mathematics met Julia, Sonja, Bastian, Hubert, Robert as well as Hiko, Gerhard and Laura from the department of
computational linguistics (ICL) for learning more about their research projects and the interdiciplinary science of IWR.

| On May 7, Professor Marta Sanz-Solé talked on "Visiting Sets with Random Trajectories".
Marta Sanz-Solé is the current president of the European Mathematical Society and also holds a chair at the University of Barcelona.
She visited HGS MathComp for our Ladyshenskaya Lecture.
This lecture series gives all doctoral students of HGS MathComp and also interested people the chance to meet a famous female mathematician.

| Opening of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM [2012-04-04] | ||
| Five doctoral students of the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University founded the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM at the end of 2011. In the meantime, the group has grown to the largest German Student Chapter and celebrated its Opening Ceremony on March 29. With generous support of SIAM, IWR and the Heidelberg Graduate School HGS MathComp, the event was a bright success, attracting both participants from industry as well as renowned scientists of Heidelberg University.
Dörte Beigel and Andreas Sommer are excited: We have expected about 50 participants to attend, finally it have been more than 70! The two were responsible for the organization of the opening event. The remaining members of the executive board of the Heidelberg Chapter of SIAM, Kathrin Hatz, Holger Diedam and Dennis Janka, returned just in time from Hanoi, Vietnam, where they had given a lecture and support for foundation of a new SIAM student chapter.
Holger Diedam welcomed the invited guest speaker Jürgen Hairbucher from Intel, as well as the numerous attending guests, among them the co-founder of the IWR Prof. Jürgen Wolfrum and five representatives of the second German SIAM-Chapter of Trier University, and shortly summarized the activities of the newly founded Heidelberg Chapter: The main goal of our Chapter is to foster the bilateral exchange of industry and academia, as well as strenghening the cooperation between young scientists worldwide.
Prof. Rolf Rannacher, dean of the faculty of mathematics and computer science at Heidelberg University, gave a detailed introduction on the wide fields of application of mathematical methods developed at IWR, which range from sattelite orbit determination and optimization of chemical reaction networks to simulation of blood in human heart vessels and automated reconstruction of the cambodian Angkor Wat temple from 3d surface scans - to give just a few examples.
Guest speaker Jürgen Hairbucher, director of the Intel Open Lab Munich and jointly responsible for coordination of Intels research and development in the European Union, described Intels vision for 2020. The semiconductor giant runs a variety of research, including the areas energy efficiency, mobility and image processing, often in collaboration with universities.
Three selected talks describing the state-of-the-art reseach at IWR marked the ending of the scientific part of the opening ceremony. Dr. Mario Mommer gave a presentation on mathematical modeling and simulation of subdiffusion (transport in porous media), that occurs in living cells. Also dealing with medical applications, Dr. Thomas Wick illuminated in his talk the formation of cardio-vascular diseases as a result of disturbed blood circulation.
The audience award, if there had been one, would go to Simon Lenz. In his talk titled Delay Effects in the Livescore of Unser Star für Baku (USfB), he bridged the gap between science and everydays life in the most entertaining way (USfB was the 2012 TV show to determine the german candidate for the Eurovision Song Contest that reaches 100-600 million viewers internationally; the Livescore in USfB showed the current ranking of each candidate and was continuously updated by incoming votes). He figured out why the crowd-pleaser Roman Lob who finally won the German final almost failed in the first show despite a tremendous performance. The mathematical analysis clearly shows that two major effects lead to the unwanted outcome: First, the technical delay between broadcasting the television signal and the incoming of votes, and second, the laziness of the viewers that only called if their favorite was acutely in danger of being eliminated explained Simon Lenz. As a result of this voting system, even an outstanding performer could easily fail, just because his supporters recognize too late that he is in danger being voted off the show. | ZONTA award for Alumna Miriam Fritsche (only German) [2012-03-14] | ||
| Für ihre herausragende Dissertation auf dem Gebiet der Statistischen Physik und der Biophysik wird Dr. Miriam Fritsche mit dem Förderpreis 2011 des ZONTA Clubs Heidelberg ausgezeichnet. Die Nachwuchswissenschaftlerin erhält die mit 3.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung, die in Kooperation mit der Universität Heidelberg vergeben wird, für ihre Doktorarbeit zum Thema Chromosome Kissing und Chromosomenfaltung in Eukaryotischen und Bakteriellen Zellen. Die Arbeit ist im Rahmen der Heidelberger Graduiertenschule der mathematischen und computergestützten Methoden für die Wissenschaften (HGS MathComp) an der Fakultät für Physik und Astronomie der Ruperto Carola entstanden. Die Preisverleihung findet am Montag, 5. März 2012, statt. Die Präsidentin des Heidelberger ZONTA Clubs, Dr. Andrea Köster, wird den Preis überreichen.
Miriam Fritsche (Jahrgang 1983) studierte Physik an der Technischen Universität Darmstadt, der Cantoblanco Universidad in Madrid (Spanien) sowie der Università degli Studi di Milano-Bicocca (Italien). Nach dem Master-Abschluss im Jahr 2008 wechselte sie an die Universität Heidelberg, um hier ihre Dissertation vorzubereiten. Dafür erhielt sie ein Promotionsstipendium der HGS MathComp. Forschungsaufenthalte führten sie an das Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research und das Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge (USA). Ihre Doktorarbeit, die sie im Herbst vergangenen Jahres abschließen konnte, wurde von Prof. Dr. Dieter W. Heermann vom Institut für Theoretische Physik der Universität Heidelberg betreut. Aktuell will Dr. Fritsche am Collège des Ingénieurs in Paris, einer Einrichtung zur Förderung von überdurchschnittlich guten Absolventen der Ingenieur- und Naturwissenschaften mit der Vorbereitung auf eine verantwortliche Tätigkeit in der Industrie, einen postgradualen Master of Business Administration erwerben.
ZONTA International ist ein weltweiter Zusammenschluss von Frauen, die selbstständig oder in verantwortlicher Position tätig sind und das Ziel verfolgen, die rechtliche, politische, wirtschaftliche und berufliche Stellung der Frau zu stärken. | Visit of a renowned Mathematician - Prof Varadhan at the HGS MathComp [2012-02-08] | ||
| Prof Srinivasa Varadhan from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York, USA, visited Heidelberg University in the course of HGS MathComps Courant Lecture series. In his talk on \"large deviations for random graphs and random matrices\", the renowned mathematician and expert on probalistic theory reported on his current research.
Complex networks can be found nearly everywhere. There are economic or social networks like commodities or partnerships as well as communication or transport networks in form of internet and logistics. Physiochemical, biological or technological networks are chemical reactions, populations, ecosystems and whole production systems. Prof Varadhan analyses mathematically the behavior of networks like these, which are characterized by the number of knots and random cross-linking. He showed that the networks can adopt different conditions and that the transition between the conditions is accidental. For the understanding and the handling of networks the exploration of possible conditions is crucial.
Since 1963 Prof Varadhan has been working at the Courant Institute, one of the leading centers for mathematics and its applications. He received several honors as the renowned Abel Prize of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences, which he was awarded in 2007, and in 2010 he obtained the National Medal of Science from the hands of the President of the USA. Varadhan is a current member of numerous societies. His visit to Heidelberg was made possible by HITS, MATCH and HGS MathComp.

| Annual Colloquium 2011: Third time is a charm! [2011-11-16] | ||
| The 3rd HGSMathComp Annual Colloquium held from November 9 - 10, 2011 at the Youth Hostel in Altleiningen was given the motto Solus Numquam
Vades! (You will never walk alone!) - a statement to emphasize the fellowship of the graduate school. The colloquium was situated at the beautiful site of the Castle Altleiningen in the Palatinate Forest.
The well elaborated two days schedule included four Mini-Symposia and a
poster session on the first day, as well as Software Introductory
Lectures and Alumni Talks on the second day and offered the
participating PhD students and their supervisors a great platform to
meet and discuss ideas with other fellows. The contributions provided an
overview over the wide range of research fields associated with
HGSMathComp, e.g. applications in environmental physics, biomolecular
simulation and scientific computing in the humanities.
During the colloquium excellent talks were given and remarkable posters
were presented with the most outstanding among them honored by a Referee
Best Talk Award (Sven Wanner), two Referee Best Poster Awards (Karsten
Staack and Christoph Weiler), an Audience Best Talk Award (Kathrin
Hatz), as well as an Audience Best Poster Award (Christian Goll).
Congratulations to the honorees!
The vivid and well-attended Social Event that offered both a cozy
get-together in the restaurant and an adventurous midnight walk
with torches was a great occasion to keep good company with the fellows
in a casual and fun way.
After all, the 3rd HGSMathComp Annual Colloquium was a great and
successful event! True to the motto - Solus Numquam Vades! - spending two
days together in a remote location brought all HGSMathComp fellows

| Excellent Science, Vivid Presentation [2011-10-18] | ||
| On Thursday, October 13th, the Klaus Tschira Foundation presented the KlarText! award for understandable Science.
Dr. Christian Kirches, who studied numerical mathematics and optimization in the work group of Prof. Dr.Dr.h.c. Hans Georg Bock, had already completed his diploma thesis at the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR) at Heidelberg University.
He completed his doctoral thesis under the supervision of Bock and his colleague Prof.Dr. Gerhard Reinelt in the structured graduate program of HGS MathComp in November 2010 summa com laude. Titled Fast
Numerical Methods for Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Model-Predictive Control, Kirches describes in this thesis fast control algorithms and their applications in automotive industry. The algorithms that he developed during his PhD project are already patented.
Christian Kirches was a doctoral fellow of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences. After his thesis he conducted a 4-months visit at Argonne National Laboratory, IL, USA and is now working as a postdoc at IWR.
If every vehicle would choose the economically best gear any time during driving, much energy and time could be saved. To complete this task, Kirches had to fight a one with 24 zeroes: That is the incredible number of gear shift combinations for trucks with 16 gears doing 20 gear shift operations. To make it possible for a mathematician to teach gear shifting to the board computer, a series of specialized problems had to be solved to downsize this huge number. The solution was a method where the researcher only selectively adjusted gear shifts and partially computed optimal shift combinations. In Kirches publication Schnell Geschaltet! (Fast Shifting!) the reader gets a fascinating insight into the world of mathematics. Through constant connection to every-day-problems, clear and precise language and intuitive analogies the numbers don\'t stay abstract quantities. | Equal opportunities [2011-08-01] | ||
| An information afternoon on the topic of achieving excellent gender equality, organized for students and affiliates by the equal opportunities commissioners of the faculities of Mathematics & Computer Sciences and Physics & Astronomy took place in the main lecture hall of the Kirchhoff Institute for Nuclear Physics on June 8th. On this occasion instead of nuclear research and new methods in mathematics, the issue which hopefully will soon be a day-to-day one at Heidelberg University, was about combining science and family life.
Scientist of both genders and different career levels who successfully combine career and family life, reported on their personal experiences: A PhD student of the physic research group "dynamics of complex systems" started the talk sessions. She reported about the daily routine which she adjusted to optimize her situation: in the early morning some time for child, household, doctor's appointments etc. from 1 pm onwards highly concentrated laboratory work which has to be interrupted at 6 pm due to the closure of the child care facility. A postdoc researcher from the "Universe Cluster Munich", who is nine month pregnant with her third child, mentioned the importance of her own individual organization to allow for a full time job. Furthermore she is dependend on crèche facilities and an au-pair. A BIOMS- and Emmy Noether group leader combines his career- and family duties with the help of his wife who works part-time. Finally Prof Barbara Paech, successful scientist and university lecturer and mother of two, talked about her development and emphasized also the positive aspect of the concept of dual career. After a snack, which gave the opportunity of individual exchange and networking, the equal opportunity office of Heidelberg University presented its options.
The success of the event was reflected in the very vivid discussions among the participants and gives the scientists reason to hope that the combination of career and family will one day be a matter of course.

 The 2nd Annual Colloquium of HGS MathComp 19. Friday 2010 was a great success!
Members, alumni and invited guests enjoyed a day full of inspiring research and poster presentations and lively networking at coffee and lunch breaks in a beautiful location at HCI. "I'm very satisfied. There are a lot more participants than last year!", said Dr. Michael Winckler, administrative director of the graduate school. Prof. Hans Georg Bock talked in his opening speech about achievements and future prospects of HGS MathComp. The organization team made a good job in making everything work smoothly: arranging the mini symposia, taking care of technique and good food etc. Thorsten Bonato was evaluated by the participants to be the winner of this year's "Best Presentation"-award. Astha Jaiswal and Andreas Sommer presented the "Best Posters". The presentations were carefully evaluated by the alumni Prof. Angelika Altmann-Dieses and Gerd Rücker and an invited guest Dr. Rolf Wallenwein. . | Honorary Symposium at Cluj-Napoca, Romania [2010-09-24] | ||
 In the frame of the international conference NAAT 2010, Maria Neuss-Radu (HGS MathComp, IWR, Uni Heidelberg) , Ioana Chiorean (Babe&s-Bolyai University), Doiana Ciorănescu (University Pierre et Marie Curie - Paris 6) and Horia Ene (Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy) organized the workshop "Trends in multi-scale analysis and homogenization", honoring Prof. Willi Jäger on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The symposium's main aims were to present recent progress with respect to multi-scale problems, a field where Willi Jäger has a very active contribution and where he achieved outstanding results.

| Successful start of the Courant Lecture series - talk by Nick Trefethen [2010-05-19] | ||
 MathComp's <i>Distinguished Lectures Program</i> encourages leading international scientists to make a presentation at the HGS and stay for a short-term visit, and to be available for individual work with the doctoral students as well as their supervisors.
As a prominent speaker of the first <b>Courant lecture</b> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Trefethen">Prof. Lloyd Nicholas Trefethen</a> gave a stimulating introduction to a new way of numerical computing. The original idea was to represent functions using Chebyshev expansions whose length is determined adaptively to maintain an accuracy close to machine precision. Building on this, a powerful computational methodology has been developed that the current president-elect of <a href="http://siam.org">SIAM</a> explained and illustrated in his talk.

| Talk Dr. Naydenova [2010-03-29] | ||
 Today, Dr. Iliyana Naydenova from the College of Energetics and Electronics, Technical University Sofia, Bulgaria gave a public talk at HGS MathComp about "Soot Formation Modeling". The topic of modeling the formation of soot in combustion processes is highly complex and currently only partially understood. A complete model to treat not only specific combustion processes, but several temperature and pressure ranges, combustors and gas mixes is an area of active research.<br><br>
At IWR the work groups "Modeling and Simulation of Reactive Flows" and "Multiphase Flows and Combustion" are working towards the understanding, the modeling and simulation of combustion processes. Several PhD students of HGS MathComp currently work on doctoral projects in this interdisciplinary field.Michael Winckler |

 Celebrating a double anniversary and an honorary doctorate<br><br>
The Department of Mathematics at the University Erlangen-Nürnberg is celebrating a 40th and 60th anniversary at the same time. On this occasion, the granting of an honorary doctorate to Prof. Rolf Rannacher (IWR, Heidelberg University) was celebrated on Nov 6th 2009 in the Aula at the Erlangen Castle. <br><br>
Applied Mathematics claimed a double anniversary and rightly so: the chairs for applied mathematics as part of the Faculty for Technics were installed in the years 1968 and 1970. The Institute for Applied Mathematics has developed from these two appointments, which established this field in both research and education at the Friedrich-Alexander-University. But the first appointment to a chair in Applied Mathematics was much earlier, in 1950 - the holder of the chair was in particular responsible for the "Zuse Z23", the first electronic calculating machine of the university.<br><br>
As a main part of the celebration "40/60 years of Applied Mathematics in Erlangen", Prof. Dr. K.-D. Grüske, University Rector, and Prof. Dr. F.Duzaar, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, bestowed the title of honorary doctorate to Prof. Dr. R. Rannacher, one of the most prominent German representatives for Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. The laudatio was held by Prof. Dr. P. | Summer School on Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems [2012-09-27] | ||

24 participants from all over the world came together for the second Summer School on Flow and Transport in Terrestrial Systems. In the lectures the organizers Dr. Olaf Ippisch (IWR Heidelberg), Prof. Kurt Roth (IUP Heidelberg) and Prof. Hans-Jörg Vogel (UFZ Leipzig/Halle) covered the physical processes for ground water flow and transport of dissolved chemicals as well as their numerical simulation.
In the afternoon the participants used their new knowledge for the exercises, where they did their own numerical simulations on groundwater flow.

| DuB Foundation: Postdoc Sponsorship [2012-03-22] | |
| To January 1st 2012, the Daimler and Benz Foundation will establish a new fellowship program which is addressed to young postdoc scientists, regardless of the applicant's nationality. Especially in this phase, important research work is done. To support their work in science, postdocs and junior professors, as well as young scientists in a comparable position, e. g., independent team leaders of groups of young researchers, are to be sponsored in the early phase of their scientific work. Applications can be submitted for the first time until November 15th 2011.
The annual funding sum is 20,000 Euros per fellowship. Because the Daimler and Benz Foundation wants to promote outstanding young scientists in the autonomy of their research, the use of the funds is placed at the fellowship holders discretion. It can be used, according to the fellow's individual needs, for financing computers or technical equipment, scientific assistants, research travel, or for participation in conferences. Only printing costs and expendable items are excluded. For the organization of own scientific conferences, additional funds from the foundation can also be applied for to an amount of 2,500 Euros. | The role of multiscale structure in biological systems [2011-10-07] | ||
| From September 27-29, 2011, there was a a workshop on the role of multiscale structure in biological systems at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling in Warsaw (ICM).
This workshop was devoted to mathematical modelling of the population dynamics including spatial aspects, such as intra and extra cellular transport of molecules, and physiological heterogeneity.
Junior investigators and fellows of HGS MathComp, e.g. Alexandra Köthe, Elfriede Friedmann, Daniel Gerecht and Anna Marciniac-Czochra, gave talks there and organized this two-day event. More information can be found on the corresponding website.

| Last week the 3rd conference on Scientific Computing and Cultural Heritage (SCCH'11) took place in the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (HAW) organized by the IWR and the HGS MathComp. Like the previous conference in 2009 it attracted speakers from all over Europe as well as the United States and Asia. The contents of the presentations span an interesting wide range of various methods, applications and projects, like the MayaArch3D collaboration of the University of New Mexico and the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Bonn. The invited talk by Henri Eisenbeiss (ETH Zürich) gave an exhaustive overview about newest Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) used in remote sensing and photogrammetry. The invited lecture about detecting and predicting climate effects on cultural stone deterioration by Marie-Francoise Andre (Université Blaise Pascal) demonstrated the urge to understand the long term effects of restoration and tourism on precious temple sites all around the world. Not only Cultural Heritage senior professional were attracted - there were also remarkable student presentation about analysis of historic documents of China, Quadrocopters for excavations as well as reverse engineering to understand archaeological artefacts. The latter was presented by Vera Moitinho (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and won the price for the best student presentation. | The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar. The Institutes for Advanced Study support the focused, self-directed work of outstanding researchers. The fellows benefit from the finest intellectual and research conditions and from the stimulating environment of a multi-disciplinary and international community of first-rate scholars.
EURIAS Fellowships are mainly offered in the fields of the humanities and social sciences but may also be granted to scholars in life and exact sciences, provided that their proposed research project does not require laboratory facilities and that it interfaces with humanities and social sciences. The diversity of the 14 participating IAS offers a wide range of possible research contexts in Europe for worldwide scholars.
Applicants may select up to three IAS outside their country of nationality or residence as possible host institutions.
The Programme welcomes applications worldwide from promising young scholars as well as from leading senior researchers. Based on the 2011/2012 application campaign, the EURIAS selection process has proven to be highly competitive. | The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) at the University of Heidelberg celebrated 25 years of research in image processing in Heidelberg on April 15, 2011 in the old auditorium (Alte Aula) of the University. Within 25 years a small research group at the Institute for Environmental Physics grew into Germany's largest image processing center. Three alumni (Dr. Horst Haußecker, Intel Labs Santa Clara; Dr. Timo Kohlberger, Siemens Princeton; Dr. Björn Menze, MIT Cambridge), one of the industrial cooperation partners (Dr. Wolfgang Niehsen, Bosch Hildesheim) and Prof. Bernd Jähne (HCI) gave a vivid insight into the developments of the last 25 years and the many application fields of image processing.
The Heidelberg Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) is an "Industry-on-Campus"-project of the University of Heidelberg. It was founded in 2008 together with Robert Bosch GmbH, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, Heidelberg Engineering, Silicon Software GmbH, and PCO AG as part of the University's excellence initiative. The goal of the HCI is a close interaction between basic and applied research in an environment characterized by interdisciplinary - the HCI is part of a central university institute bridging several faculties, the Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), and a multitude of fields such as industrial quality control, driver assistance systems, medicine, biology, and environmental sciences, to name just a few. The HCI works on the paradigm that the basic problems of image processing are largely independent of its array of applications. | Annual Colloquium: 2010-11-19
"Methods meet Applications" was the motto of the second Annual Colloquium of the Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for the Sciences. True to this motto, the doctoral students of the HGS MathComp contributed talks and posters giving a picture of the wide spectrum of research carried out at the HGS MathComp: Applications ranging from modeling the HIV life cycle, creating modern art by dynamic motion to analyzing the airline pricing problem as well as theory on the numerical treatment of the related differential equations models. The lunch and coffee breaks rounded off the event offering time for discussion of new ideas and projects with the other fellows and supervisors.
A novelty of this year's Annual Colloquium was the participation of alumni which provided an excellent insight into the multitude job opportunities for the fellows. Congratulations to the winners of the best talk award (Thorsten) and the best poster award (Astha, Andreas).

| Digital Postprocessing of Images for Historians [2010-10-25] | ||
 An excursion to the State Archives of Venice was organized by Transcultural Studies of Heidelberg University, Trading Diasporas group of Georg Christ and took place from September 4 to 12, 2010.
In a cooperation with the Visualization and Numerical Geometry group of Susanne Krömker, IWR, participants of the excursion learned about digital image processing in theory and practice. The course was especially designed for graduate students and PhD students, but also postdocs of the Historical Seminar who more and more are faced with scanned images of original texts. These handwritten and hardly readable originals gain much by sophisticated image processing techniques
available in standard programs like Adobe Photoshop or the free software gimp.

It is planned to also investigate handwritings on vellum with a 3D close range scanner in a future activity. Therefore the course also introduced to scanning technique recording embossments in the micrometer range. In this way the cooperation with the State Archives of Venice will hopefully go on next year including nondestructive investigations on

| Interdisziplinäre Diskussionsplattform [2010-10-15] | |
| Das IDK ist eine offene und interdisziplinäre Diskussionsplattform, die Heidelberger Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen nun schon seit mehr als 15 Jahren die Möglichkeit bietet, einander ein Forum zu geben, aktuelle Forschung zu diskutieren, Networking zu betreiben und die wissenschaftliche Karriere zu planen. Die teilnehmenden Doktorandinnen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften schaffen sich selbst den Raum zum wissenschaftlichen Austausch über die eigenen Forschungsprojekte. Das Kolloquium bietet die Möglichkeit, das eigene Dissertationsprojekt vorzustellen und interdisziplinär diskutieren zu lassen. Im besten Fall begleitet das Kolloquium die Promovierende durch die gesamte Dissertationsphase und räumt ihr die Möglichkeit ein, die Fortschritte ihrer Arbeit regelmäßig, in Form von Fortschritts- und Abschlussberichten, zu präsentieren. Gerade hier hat sich die interdisziplinäre Zusammensetzung der Gruppe vor allem was die Diskussion von Methoden- und Forschungsansätzen betrifft als sehr bereichernd und konstruktiv erwiesen.
Abgesehen vom interdisziplinären Austausch, von gegenseitiger Hilfestellung und Motivation haben wir in den letzten Semestern auch zunehmend externe Referentinnen und Referenten zu spezifischen Themenabenden eingeladen. Ausgehend von unserer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Position als Doktorandinnen steht dabei die akademische Karriereplanung als Frau im Vordergrund. Somit geben wir von Semesterprogramm zu Semesterprogramm stets unterschiedlich gewichtet neben inhaltlich-thematischen Schwerpunkten auch der Aneignung überfachlicher Kompetenzen, die für die wissenschaftliche Laufbahn zielführend sind, und der Reflexion der eigenen Karrieren in der Wissenschaft Raum.

| deal.II Workshop "Recent and future development with and of deal.II" [2010-08-23] | ||
 About 30 people participated in the workshop about deal.II. Among them were students, Ph.D students as well as professors mainly from Germany but also from other countries in Europe and the United States. We had three days of great talks about the development within deal.ll and talks given by people that use deal.II. There was also time in this workshop to discuss the future development of the finite element software library with experts and users. | Hubert Mara of IWR looks into mysterious "Alte Burg" ("Old Castle") [2010-04-06] | ||
 HGS MathComp computer science student Hubert Mara who is part of Susanne Krömker's research group ,,Visualization and Numerical Geometry" helps to investigate an archaeological significant site from the Middle Ages - so called "Alte Burg" at the mountain range of Hunsrück.
So far, scientist couldn't describe either the origin of this castle nor its age although "Alte Burg" represents a landmark of ancient territorial interests and maybe it is part of a supposed Mosel-Mittelrhein route.
Hubert Mara works together with the medieval historian Olaf Wagener on a virtual inspection and 3D imaging of this castle and the area around: "To be part of this archaeological expedition was quite an exciting experience. Due to the fact that we worked together with the the Physical Geography group (Head: Olaf Bubenzer) with a long-range 3D-scanner, we got a lot of data that now has to be analyzed." The historic context will be supervised by the Transcultural Studies (TS) Group of Georg Christ (assoc. member of IWR).
First results will be published on "6th burgenkundliche Fachtagung", a colloquium in cooperation of the "Mittelalterarchäologie-Kolleg" (TS, University Heidelberg) and "Freundeskreis Bleidenberg e.V.".  For a "GPGPU workshop" in cooperation with Research & Advisory, Deutsche Börse Systems AG a group of six HGS members went to Frankfurt for one afternoon. Dr. Susanne Krömker, Jens Fangerau, Jan Neddermeyer, Jan Herring, Daniel Jungblut and Dr. Michael Winckler were met by a group of experts from the Research and Advisory.

The workshop was highly informative and very much down to specific details and both sides gained new insights on the common research area. | Workshop in Shanghai zum Thema Scientific Computing [2010-03-11] | ||
 In der Forschung gewinnen numerische Simulationen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Das sogenannten Scientific Computing ist zu einem zentralen Standbein der Wissenschaft geworden. Diese Entwicklung mit beeinflusst hat das bereits seit 20 Jahren an der Universität Heidelberg bestehende Interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR). Diese langjährige Erfahrung möchte sich die Shanghai Jiao Tong University zunutze machen. Sie plant ein Zentrum für Scientific Computing und sieht im IWR ein Modell für die fächerübergreifende Forschung. Aus diesem Anlass hat am 12. und 13. März 2010 ein gemeinsamer Workshop stattgefunden. Für die Organisation verantworlich zeichneten Hongru Ma von der Jiao Tong University und Dieter W. Heermann von der Universität Heidelberg.
An diesem Workshop nahmen Forscher und Studenten beider Universitäten teil. Das IWR war durch die beiden Leiter von Forschernachwuchsgruppen, Susanne Krömker und Stefan Körkel, sowie den Professoren Hans Georg Bock, Dieter W. Heermann und Rolf Rannacher vertreten. Ausstrahlungskraft hatte dieser Workshop über die Jiao Tong University hinaus. So nahmen Kollegen aus der Fudan University und der Dalian University of Technology teil.
Das Themenspektrum des Vortragsprogramms war breit gefächert. Neben Beitragen zum Scientific Computing in der Mathematik, Biologie und der Physik ging es in weiteren Vorträgen um Themen wie die Bildverabeitung und die Kommunikationstechnik bis zu industriellen Anwendungen in der optimalen Steuerung von chemischen Prozessen. | Excursion: Castles in the Palatinate Forest [2009-10-01] | ||
 On October 1st & 2nd 2009, HGS MathComp and Transcultural Studies jointly organized an excursion to castles in the Palatinate Forest. From the Trifels (Annweiler) to Hambach (Neustadt) the group of 19 participants got a tour de force through both historical and geographical aspects of the area and the castles as well as technical information on scanning techniques, questions of dating parts of old buildings or aspects of statics of construction in medieval times.<br><br>
This truely interdisciplinary excursion was from the point of view of the participants not only a valuable part of the education program of Heidelberg University and the two participating institutions but also a great opportunity to see ,,the other discipline'' (and so to say, the respective other part of the city at work and in their own habits and traditions. Enjoying a good time while working in heigher education seems to be a universal asset in both areas, though ;-) <br><br>

| Compact Course: Optimization with Differential Equations (July 20-24, 2009) [2009-10-01] | ||
 More than 40 doctoral students from Heidelberg, but also from partner universities in Trier, Darmstadt, Freiburg, Leuven, and Toulouse participated in MathComp's compact course "Optimization with Differential Equations", organized by Sebastian Sager.<br><br>
The course implemented the postgraduate teaching concept that was first proposed within the proposal in the context of the "Exzellenzinitiative".<br><br>
The main goal of this compact course was to provide insight into the state-of-the-art of the research area Optimization with Differential Equations. To this end, the foundations were taught in a tutorial part with hands-on practical exercises. In a second part, current research projects were presented by people working in the field, i.e., doctoral students of MathComp, and experienced, internationally leading heads of research groups.<br><br>
The block course did build on a compact overview of deterministic optimization algorithms, derivative generation, and extensions towards optimal control and numerical algorithms for modeling in altogether nine one-hour lectures. The theoretic overview was complemented by practical hands-on exercises in the computer pool of IWR on four afternoons, giving participants enough time to implement also their own optimization problems.<br><br>
On Thursday, several doctoral students - Christian Hoffmann, Simon Lenz, Claudia Schillings, Stephan Schmidt, Christian Kirches, and Leonard Wirsching - gave the audience an idea of what current research and state-of-the-art projects in the field of optimization with differential equations may look like. On Friday, Dirk Lebiedz, Volker Schulz, and Stefan Ulbrich presented their point of view and complemented the course contents with lectures on model reduction techniques, one shot methods, and interior point methods for PDE constrained optimization problems.<br><br>
The lecturer's experience with this course, as well as the oral and written feedback provided by the participants, is very positive. It is encouraging to pursue this generic approach to giving an insight into state-of-the-art by combining a tutorial part with practical exercises and specific in-detail examples of current research projects.Sebastian Sager |

| Weltbilder der Informatik [2012-10-24] | ||
| Die emeritierte Professorin Britta Schinzel, die als erste habilitierte Informatikerin Deutschland den zweiten eingerichteten Lehrstuhl für Informatik an der Universität Aachen besetzte, sprach am Abend des 24. Oktobers über ihre BMBF-Studie "Weltbilder der Informatik".
<p>Das von 2007 bis 2011 durchgeführte Forschungsprojekt erfasste die spezifischen Wahrnehmungen, Vorstellungen und Erfahrungen von Informatik-Studierenden in Bezug auf ihr Studium. Die dabei eingeholten Stimmungsbilder liefern die Datenbasis aufgrund derer die Studie Vorschläge zur Weiterentwicklung der Informatik-Lehre formuliert.</p>
<p>Unter anderem kristallisierte sich in den von Soziologen durchgeführten Gruppendiskussionen und Einzelinterviews mit Informatik-Studierenden (Universitäten Cottbus, Dresden, Freiburg, Karlsruhe und Oldenburg) heraus, dass Nachwuchsinformatiker sich selbst nur selten als Gestaltende sehen: Obwohl sie zumindest in höhreren Semestern wissen, dass ihre Arbeit die Arbeitskultur und damit viele Entscheidungsprozesse in verschiedenen sozialen Subystemen maßgeblich beeinflusst, wird die Verantwortung, die der Informatik innewohnt, nur unzureichend berücksichtigt.</p> Link: http://mod.iig.uni-freiburg.de/cms/indexfc9a.html?id=308 Sabine Kluge |

| Die Forschungsautonomie herausragender Nachwuchswissenschaftler zu stärken, ist das Ziel eines neuen Stipendienprogramms der Daimler und Benz Stiftung. Zwei Jahre lang erhalten Postdoktoranden und Juniorprofessoren ein jährliches Stipendium in Höhe von 20.000 Euro. Die Stipendiaten können die Mittel nach individuellem Bedarf frei für ihre Forschung einsetzen: Finanzierung von Computern oder technischer Ausrüstung, wissenschaftlicher Hilfskräfte, Forschungsreisen oder der Teilnahme an Tagungen. Zusätzlich können 2.500 Euro für die Organisation eigener wissenschaftlicher Konferenzen beantragt werden.
Das Programm ist offen für alle Fachdisziplinen und Themen. Bewerben können sich Nachwuchswissenschaftler, die in eine deutsche Universität oder wissenschaftliche Einrichtung institutionell eingebunden sind und ein eigenes Forschungsprojekt betreiben. Bewerber sollten zum Zeitpunkt des angestrebten Förderungsbeginns nicht älter als 35 Jahre sein.
Zum 1. Januar 2012 werden das erste Mal circa zehn Stipendien vergeben. Bewerbungsschluss ist der 15. November 2011.

| Science Slam ist eine neue Form der Wissenschaftskommunikation, die schneller und
verständlicher ist als herkömmliche Fachpublikationen. Es geht vor allem darum, jungen
Wissenschaftlern die Möglichkeit zu bieten ihre Forschungsergebnisse einem breiten Publikum zu präsentieren und mit anderen Wissenschaftlern fachübergreifend in Kontakt zu treten.
Doktoranden und Postdoktoranden aus allen Fachrichtungen sind herzlich eingeladen ihre Forschungsthemen bzw. -Ergebnisse in 10-minutigen Vorträgen zu präsentieren. Selbstverständlich freuen wir uns auch, wenn zahlreiche junge Wissenschaftler als Zuschauer zum Science Slam erscheinen.

Für Beiträge junger Forscher von herausragender gesellschaftlicher Bedeutung vergibt die Körber-Stiftung jährlich Preise im Gesamtwert von über 100.000 Euro, darunter drei Spitzenpreise in Höhe von 30.000 Euro. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an Promovierte aller wissenschaftlichen Disziplinen, die mit magna oder summa cum laude promoviert worden sind. Einzureichen ist ein Text von maximal 40.000 Zeichen, in dem Bewerber die zentralen Forschungsergebnisse der Dissertation und deren gesellschaftliche Bedeutung spannend und verständlich darstellen. Der Deutsche Studienpreis wird jährlich ausgeschrieben und richtet sich jeweils an alle Promovierte eines Jahrgangs. | Relating the shape of protein binding sites to binding affinity profiles: Is there an association? [2010-10-05] | ||
 The foundation of the rational drug design process is built on identifying the crucial factors of the molecular recognition mechanism of a particular protein. Our recently published paper (Simon et al., Relating the shape of protein binding sites to binding affinity profiles: Is there an association? BMC Structural Biology 2010, 10:32) is the first study to investigate the relation between the geometric features, i.e. the "shape" of the binding sites of proteins and the computed binding affinity of drug molecules to them. Based on our findings we conclude that proteins having similar binding sites in terms of shape have some tendency to bind similar molecules but this is not a pivotal factor in the protein-ligand interaction. However, we succeeded in identifying classes of drugs where the geometric features of the protein binding site indeed played a major role in the molecular recognition process. | FIFA Women's World Cup [2011-07-16] | ||
| Thanks to HGS Mathcomp for giving us the opportunity to watch the match for third place of the FIFA Women's World Cup Germany 2011. It took place in the Rhine-Neckar-Arena in Sinsheim. We had a lot of fun watching the French and the Swedish soccer teams fighting for the bronze medal. Due to the awesome goal of Marie Hammarstrom in the 82nd minute, Sweden won the match 2:1. Although some of us were hoarse cheering the French players, we were happy for the Swedish team and it was fun to see the winners dancing ;-)

| On the occasion of the 625th anniversary of Heidelberg University more than 12 faculties as well as the team of the central university administration took part in the Heidelberg half marathon on April 10.
Also the IWR and HGS MathComp team ran the 21 km ambitious route. The pictures show Phillip Harbach, HGS MathComp student in Prof Dreuw's research group "Theoretical and Computational Chemistry".

| Das IDK ist eine offene und interdisziplinäre Diskussionsplattform, die Heidelberger Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen nun schon seit mehr als 15 Jahren die Möglichkeit bietet, einander ein Forum zu geben, aktuelle Forschung zu diskutieren, Networking zu betreiben und die wissenschaftliche Karriere zu planen. Die teilnehmenden Doktorandinnen der Geistes- und Sozialwissenschaften schaffen sich selbst den Raum zum wissenschaftlichen Austausch über die eigenen Forschungsprojekte. Das Kolloquium bietet die Möglichkeit, das eigene Dissertationsprojekt vorzustellen und interdisziplinär diskutieren zu lassen. Im besten Fall begleitet das Kolloquium die Promovierende durch die gesamte Dissertationsphase und räumt ihr die Möglichkeit ein, die Fortschritte ihrer Arbeit regelmäßig, in Form von Fortschritts- und Abschlussberichten, zu präsentieren. Gerade hier hat sich die interdisziplinäre Zusammensetzung der Gruppe - vor allem was die Diskussion von Methoden- und Forschungsansätzen betrifft - als sehr bereichernd und konstruktiv erwiesen. Abgesehen vom interdisziplinären Austausch, von gegenseitiger Hilfestellung und Motivation haben wir in den letzten Semestern auch zunehmend externe Referentinnen und Referenten zu spezifischen Themenabenden eingeladen. Ausgehend von unserer eigenen wissenschaftlichen Position als Doktorandinnen steht dabei die akademische Karriereplanung als Frau im Vordergrund. Somit geben wir - von Semesterprogramm zu Semesterprogramm stets unterschiedlich gewichtet - neben inhaltlich-thematischen Schwerpunkten auch der Aneignung überfachlicher Kompetenzen, die für die wissenschaftliche Laufbahn zielführend sind, und der Reflexion der eigenen Karrieren in der Wissenschaft Raum.
Alle interessierten Nachwuchswissenschaftlerinnen sind herzlich zur Teilnahme im Rahmen des Sommersemester-Programms eingeladen!

 An Erasmus collaboration between the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Mathematics of Politecnico die Milano was signed by Prof. Kohnen in Heidelberg and Prof. Spinelli at Politecnico.

This collaboration is intended to strengthen the partnership between HGS and the Modeling and Scientific Computing School in Milan (MOX http:mox.polimi.it). The collaboration initially spans three years and involves the exchange of 3 students and 1 post-doc each way.

| First fellows seminar [2013-02-20] | ||
| On February 5th 2013 the First HGS MathComp Fellows Seminar was held.
In this first session, around 40 attendees saw two excellent and
entertaining talks, one on graphical models by Bernhard Kausler
and one on experimental design by Andreas Schmidt.
The idea of this seminar is to establish a new, regular HGS-wide event,
where current research topics are presented in a comprehensible way.
After the talks the attendees have the opportunity for further discussion
in a relaxed setting with food and drinks in the common room.

| 4th Annual Colloquium in Erbach [2012-12-10] | ||
| On the 20th and 21st of November 2012 more than 100 fellows, mentors and principal
investigators came together to meet and present their work.
This years motto was "Welcome to the next level" - an allusion to the funding
extension of the HGS MathComp as well as to our efforts to improve the
Annual Colloquium from year to year, but also a reminder to all of us
that a playful approach to science fosters creativity and often helps
achieving our goals faster. The scientific program of the first day was
made up of 18 talks in 6 minisymposia and 30 posters, and Stefan Wiesberg (best talk)
and Cedric Debes (best poster) received the awards for their excellent
contributions. On the second day of the retreat we enjoyed two group talks
as well as the presentations of 6 invited speakers, Jan Albersmeyer (Enovos),
Volkmar Reinhardt (SEW Eurodrive), Hergen Schultze and Annika Wedemeier (both BASF),
Tim Flohrer (ESA/ESOC) and Shirin Faraji (IWR). Their presentations gave
a valuable insight on the opportunities that we have after our time
as PhD students. Equally important and successful
as the scientific program was the social program on the evening of the first day,
where the attendees of the Annual Colloquium participated in a relaxing night walk,
in a most entertaining powerpoint karaoke event, and in a variety of games.
Finally, the organizers would like to thank all participants for making the
Annual Colloquium such a memorable event. It was a blast.

| Andreas Potschka: Gewinner des Klaus Tschira Preises KlarText 2012!!! [2012-10-12] | ||
| Vita
Dr. rer. nat. Andreas Potschka (geb. 1980) beendete sein Studium der Mathematik, mit dem Nebenfach Informatik, an der Ruprechts-Karls-Universität Heidelberg im Jahre 2006 mit Auszeichnung. Seine Forschungsarbeit verfasste er anschließend am Interdisziplinären Zentrum für Wissenschaftliches Rechnen (IWR) der Universität Heidelberg. Unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Hans Georg Bock legte er im Dezember 2011 seine Promotion mit dem Titel A direct method for the numerical solution of optimization problems with time-periodic PDE constraints ab, welche mit summa cum laude bewertet wurde. 2009 wurde er mit dem Preis "Best talk from a didactical point of view" bei der 14th Belgian-French-German Conference on Optimization in Leuven ausgezeichnet. 2008 wurde er Mitglied der HGS MathComp. Seit 2011 leitet er die Nachwuchsforschungsgruppe MOBOCON am IWR.
Siegerbeitrag Unsere Welt wird immer komplexer. Das gilt nicht nur für die ganz persönliche tägliche Entscheidungsfindung bei ständig wachsender Auswahl an Kaffeevariationen, sondern auch für immer aufwändigere Produktionsmethoden in der Verfahrenschemie. Viele kennen vermutlich das Phänomen, dass sich bei einem Latte Macchiato Milchschaum und Espresso langsam vermischen. Aber lassen sich die Milch und der Espresso eigentlich auch wieder trennen? Vor ähnlichen Fragen steht man häufig in der pharmazeutischen Industrie, wo Wirkstoffe von unwirksamen oder gesundheitsschädlichen Nebenprodukten getrennt werden müssen. In seinem Siegerartikel Mathe Macchiato: Optimal trennen beschreibt Andreas Potschka anschaulich wie komplex die physikalische Trennungsprozesse oft ablaufen. Dabei erklärt er allgemein verständlich die komplizierten Abläufe und Fachbegriffe. Er zeigt, wie diese Prozesse durch Mathematik optimiert werden können und welche Anforderungen der mathematische Algorithmus erfüllen musste, den er hierfür in seiner Doktorarbeit entwickelt hat. | The American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of a number of acclaimed journals such as "Science", held its annual conference from February 17-21, 2011 in Washington DC. The Heidelberg Graduate School of Mathematical and Computational Methods for Sciences took part in this international meeting and presented its scientific aims and students at the corresponding exhibition. Dr. Nina Zweig, junior research group leader at IWR's Collaboratory for Image Processing (HCI) gave a talk at the workshop "Discover the German Southwest: Study and Research in Baden-Württemberg", organized by Baden-Württemberg's Agency for International Economic and Scientific Cooperation.
This year's theme of the AAAS - Science without Borders - offered an interdisciplinary blend of more than 150 symposia, plenary and topical lectures, specialized seminars, poster presentations, and the large exhibit hall, where Heidelberg University presented it's Cluster of Excellence "CellNetworks", the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe", the Graduate Academy and the HGS MathComp who all presented their research approaches and prospects for funding doctoral and postdoctoral researchers.

| Die 1. Deutsche Informatikerinnentagung findet am 7. und 8. März 2011 in Stuttgart statt. Die Tagung wird gemeinsam von der Universität Stuttgart und der RWTH Aachen ausgerichtet und durch das Ministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst des Landes Baden-Württemberg MWK gefördert. Chairs sind Prof. Sabina Jeschke (RWTH Aachen University) und Meike Tilebein (Universität Stuttgart) sowie Susanne Ihsen (Technische Universität München), Heidi Schelhowe (Universität Bremen) und Heike Wiesner (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin).
Das übergreifende Ziel der Tagung besteht darin, eine große Zahl der heute im deutschsprachigen Gebiet tätigen Wissenschaftlerinnen der Informatik und eng verwandter Gebiete zusammenzubringen, um neue Kooperationen und Netzwerke anzustoßen.
Unter den Dachthemen "Green IT" und "Cloud Computing" rufen die Veranstalterinnen der 1. Deutschen Informatikerinnentagung zur Einreichung von Beiträgen (Full Paper und Poster-Abstracts) auf. | International Human Frontier Science Program Organization, Strasbourg [2011-01-26] | ||
| Research grants are provided for teams of scientists from different countries who wish to combine their expertise in innovative approaches to questions that could not be answered by individual laboratories. Emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring together scientists preferably from different disciplines (e.g. from chemistry, physics, computer science, engineering) to focus on problems in the life sciences.
The research teams must be international. The principal applicant must be from one of the eligible countries. However, other participating scientists and laboratories may be situated anywhere in the world. Applicants must submit a letter of intent to apply for a research grant via the HFSP web site with a deadline at the end of March, and after review, selected teams will be invited to submit a full application. Two types of Research Grant are available: Young Investigators' Grants and Program Grants.
The Human Frontier Science Program, Strasbourg, supports novel, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms; topics range from molecular and cellular approaches to systems and cognitive neuroscience. A clear emphasis is placed on novel collaborations that bring biologists together with scientists from fields such as physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and engineering to focus on problems at the frontier of the life sciences.
